Hello! I’m deep in edit mode for Inciting a Riot since I just got the manuscript back from my editor yesterday afternoon, but I had this notion/anecdote to share…so I’m going to crank out a quick blog post and get back to readying Inciting a Riot for publishing in August.
I don’t know a lot about artificial intelligence other than it scares me. At the same time, though, I’m sure the tech algorithms that let us Google all our questions, both big and small, is likely a form of artificial intelligence too.
Having said all that, it surely seems my iPod is in touch with my creativity. This became clear during today’s journey to the other side of town to stop by Jared’s The Galleria of Jewelry. I was leaving the extensive shopping mall area and inspiration struck me when John Lee Hooker’s “It Serves You Right to Suffer” started playing. The bass line in that song alone is essentially sex-in-a-song, that’s how sultry the opening is. So I’m having visions of Razor and Tennille and generally thanking God I brought my notebook with me…when the song changed. I knew it was more blues, which I felt lucky about since my iPod routinely serves up something completely discordant with my favorite songs. But, hearing the piano notes, I snatched up my iPod to get the name of the song and found it was “Goin’ Down Slow” by Howlin’ Wolf. Needless to say, I cackled my butt off about the simultaneous appropriateness and inappropriateness of the title of this song. Not sure if will make the final play list for Into the Riot, but seriously believe my iPod is one with my writing and storytelling. It’s probably just coincidence or mathematics going on, but I’m gonna believe my little music device is channeling Razor for me instead!
Music is incredibly important to me during my creative process. Well, really it’s important for me during any day. Do you ever feel like your MP3 player, iPod, or even Spotify or Pandora seems to be in tune with what’s going on with you at any given time?
That’s all I have for right now. I’m going to try to get another post up later this week, and let you know how the editing is going.
